August is tradies national health month – Let’s keep our tradies strong and safe

Safe work habits Tradies National Health

At POPES Electrical & Data Supplies, we know how hard tradies work to keep Australia running. Long hours, heavy lifting, repetitive movements, and tight deadlines all take a toll — and often, tradies put their work before their own health.

That is why August’s Tradies National Health Month is so important. Established by the Australian Physiotherapy Association (APA) in 2012, this campaign raises awareness of the physical and mental challenges tradies face, and the importance of looking after themselves.

The health challenges tradies face

Recent research shows that:
  • Over 90% of tradies experienced work-related injuries or pain in the past year.
  • 76% say pain significantly affects their quality of life.
  • 42% describe their pain as severe, often lasting months or years.
  • 87% use medication or self-medicate to manage their pain, with 30% turning to drugs or alcohol.
  • 24% fear they may need to retire early due to physical strain.

With Australia facing critical trade shortages and growing infrastructure demands, protecting the wellbeing of our existing tradie workforce is more important than ever.

How physiotherapy can help

Physiotherapists work with tradies to prevent injury, manage pain, and maintain long-term mobility and strength. They can:
  • Teach safe lifting and movement techniques to prevent injury.
  • Provide early intervention to stop minor issues becoming chronic.
  • Tailor exercises to improve strength, flexibility, and stamina.
  • Help tradies adapt their work habits as their bodies change with age.

Why it matters

Healthy tradies are not only more productive but also able to enjoy life outside of work – spending time with family, staying active, and feeling their best. When tradies thrive, so do our communities. This August, we encourage all our tradie customers and their employers to take time for a check-up, learn injury prevention techniques, and make health a priority. Because your tools are important — but your health is priceless.
